This question perplexes people especially here in America. If you ask someone to tell me about yourself or answer who are you? They start to describe what they do, where they’re from and where they were raised. They give you all these credentials as if they’re in a job interview.

However that’s not who you are. None of that begins to tell someone who you are. Who you are is about the inner core of you! It’s the core beliefs, values, and inner demons of you, your very essence not your resume.  If I answer with the title of Engineer your mind likely goes well of course you’re Nigerian, most Nigerian men are engineers. Where I’m from, my age, height, salary, the car I drive, home I live in, none of these things give you anymore of an idea of who I am even if you add a picture of what I look like.

Who you are is about your purpose in this world and how you relate to it! For me my purpose is to leave it better than I arrived. I’m not trying to save the world but I do want to create a world that’s better for my children even it’s within the walls of this home. I want them to be strong when they absolutely must be but to enjoy more of the peace the world has to offer. I have only just arrived to this conclusion of not trying to save the world honestly in the last few years. The radical, self arrogant pretentious spirit within me lastesd pretty long of wanting to save the world. I’m such a pious asshole thinking that I’m surely some chosen protagonist that’s destined to save the world from itself. The irony being that I could barely save myself.

Actually I would say my strong desire of wanting to save the world even though I really had no distinct plan as to how was merely a deflection from ignoring the real deeper issues within me. Imagine that?! I’m not just the hero but the villain within myself. I’m the beauty and the beast yet had not enough self awareness to realize that because I’m also the fool. Having big goals isn’t the problem. The problem lies within having big goals without the big actions to proceed it. We love our events but not the process. However it’s the process that creates everything. You see if I told you who I am by announcing why I chose to be an Engineer despite the fact that we’re (Nigerians) are hazed to become engineers you’ll understand more of Who I am!

So asking someone why they’re who they are teaches you more about who they are rather than asking who they are.
